The question of the season? “How To Avoid Holiday Weight Gain?”

Did you know that people are already gaining weight during the holiday season? As a personal trainer  in St. Pete Fl. , I love the opportunity to share my best tips and tricks and help folks all over the world into the bodies they truly deserve. I LOVED all of the emails letting me know how it helped our readers and followers stay on track through the most sugary holiday of the year and I hope it helped you too. IF you missed it, be sure to check it out and let me know what you think.

You might think that holiday weight gain starts on Thanksgiving and lasts through the New Year.

From what I’ve been hearing from our private clients and group fitness members  is that, the reality is, it started on October 31.

Halloween.

Grabbing a Snickers bar here and a Milky Way bar there from your little one’s Halloween stash or a hand full of home made cookies

or snacks at work leads to

a lot of out of control eating.

And justifying.

The justification looks something like this:

“I ate a few pieces of Halloween candy from my kids stash and a cookie one of the girls brought into the office….”

“The stores now have candy in Christmas wrappers so I’m buying some to keep in the house through the holidays and I can’t say “no” to the home made goodies from neighbors and co workers  because I don’t want to hurt their feelings.”

“Thanksgiving is coming up and I know I’ll be eating more than usual.”

“I’ve been invited to a few Christmas parties and I have holiday shopping to do. This will interfere with my workouts.”

And it just keeps snowballing.

And you justify it by saying you will start again in January.

But in the meantime, you’re silently kicking yourself for letting the weight sneak up on you this holiday season…again.

Without a doubt, planning and strategizing for the holidays is the number 1 topic at our group camps and in our Private sessions

right now so I wanted to  give our BEST tips to get you through the next 7 weeks on track and feeling fabulous !

Don’t try to diet during the holidays – Set a goal of trying to maintain your present weight. That way, you have a realistic goal. You allow yourself to indulge here and there, but you don’t “go over the edge.”

Keep your goals firmly planted in your mind – We all get “caught up” from time to time. While in “the moment”, it is quite easy to lose sight of your ultimate vision and why you began your fitness or nutrition program in the first place. Spend some time prior to the beginning of the Holiday season, reinforcing your “Why’s”. How will your life be better when you are living at your goal weight? What will you be wearing? How will you be feeling? Where will you feel more confident or energetic? How will your weight loss benefit your family ? How are you feeling in your current condition? Why the heck do you want to lose this weight anyway? What sort of body do you want to be spending New Year’s Eve in ?

Keep an eye on serving sizes and portions – Any food (even not so healthy ones) can be worked into your food plan, it’s just a matter of awareness and balance. Many people label foods “good” or bad. In reality, it is all about portions and serving sizes.

Avoid the “All or nothing” mentality – Let’s face it, no one’s perfect. Chances are, there will be a time or two when you go overboard. Don’t let this lead into an “I already blew it” binge that lasts until January 1st. No one or two days is going to make or break your fat loss efforts. The key is to get right back on track the next day and consider adding some extra cardio in to work off the extra calories.

Make the effort to continue a regular exercise program – Exercise will help keep extra calories away, but it also can reduce the stress of social events and family get-togethers. 20 – 30 minutes a few times a week is doable for most people and better than none.
